Balmacara Hall is a former mill building dating back to the early 1800s. It is located in the centre of the village but has lain as a ruin for a number of years. MAAC Studio were invited to investigate the restoration and transformation of the Hall into a vibrant community hub.
The building has distinctive stone arched windows which give it real character. These had been built over by previous alterations carried out in teh 1960s and 1970s. Our aim was to restore the windows and entrances to their original condition.
The project provides flexible community space on two floors with the construction of a new fire stair and toilet facilities.
A key part of the project is to create a highly energy efficient building to reduce the communities running costs in the future.
MAAC studio are accredited conservation architects and principal designers working with traditional buildings throughout Scotland.
