There are many unusual and evocative spaces that people rarely get an opportunity to experience. Hidden towers, labyrinths and dusty libraries. It is like some out of the Name of the Rose or the Da Vinci Code.

It is easy to think that our towns have given up all their secrets, and that there is nothing left that can surprise or inspire you, but our historic buildings are a gift that just keeps giving. Too many people are too quick to write them off.

Anyway, back to work. I am staying in the relatively safety – if you don’t count all those ladders – of the Cathedral tower and taking advantage of the windows to examine the guttering. You can spot the slipped slate sitting in the gutter that is impossible to see from the ground.

I am leaving the external survey to of the roof, to the experts, my friends from Northern Steeplejacks.
You may not have a cathedral to look after, but if you want to keep an eye on your own property, I would recommend you do the same. Inspect from a safe vantage point, a neighbour’s house or higher ground nearby using binoculars. If you spot something that needs to be examined close up, get in an expert.
