The Big Reveal

.

MAAC Studio was asked to investigate damp penetration in the Ground Floor rooms and whether there was the need to install a chemical DPC. Our examination revealed that the damp wasn't coming from the ground, but from the cement on the outside stonework. The thickness of cement render was up to 75mm thick in places.

When we stripped off the cement harling, we found that the stonework was in a desperate condition. Poor quality stone and poor workmanship, which was probably the reason why they hid it behind the harl.

What the cottage looked like before

.

You start to get worried, when you test the depth a void with a bar and it just keeps going and going. Our Stone masons, AB Masonry, have done a great job tidying up the stonework, resetting stone and packing voids in the wall.

The lime pointing is a hot lime mix, which provide maximum breathability which will allow the walls to dry out and stay dry. They are saturated and we would expect that it will take at least one full summer season for the moisture levels to reduce to a more acceptable level.

.

.

The hot lime mix is going to protect the stonework and minimise any further deterioration.

With the restoration work complete, the house is going to provide a dry, healthy environment for the residents.
