Community Hut in Farr Woods, Inverenss

Nature and Architecture

This is one of my favourite buildings around Inverness, it is a little community building in Farr. Designed and built 10 years ago by Neil Sutherland Architects it has matured in its woodland setting beautifully. If you are looking for a day out, this is delightful place to visit.

Capitals of the Highlands

Like great literature, within the traditions of classical architecture there was always room for drama, humour, mystery and intrigue. Take a look at some of these columns, from around the Highlands.

Culloden Visitor Centre

April 16th is the anniversary of the Battle of Culloden. As it happens, 2018 is also the 10 year anniversary of the opening of the visitor centre. Designed by Hoskins Architects and opened in 2008, the building is a beautiful piece of architecture and on a beautiful April weekend, I took the opportunity to re-visit the centre.

Community Heritage

Our built heritage always seems to be about the castles and the and churches. Sometimes it is the modest structures that are the most evocative and stirring.

Thatched Cottages

Traditional thatched cottages are few and far between these days. However, up to the Victorian era, thatching was the common form of roof covering, even in town. Many of the houses around Inverness were thatched.

When I was invited to inspect an authentic thatched cottage, on Skye, owned by the National Trust for Scotland, it was an opportunity to reflect on highland vernacular buildings and culture.
